Appikonda Visakhapatnam

Kapila Maha Muni has installed the idol of Somalingeswara Swamy and thus the name – Kapilakonda. Formerly fisher men used to live in those places and they called it Apilakonda which is gradually became Appikonda. over the ages changed to Apillakonda and further to Appikonda, at the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Appikonda Temple is a highly revered shrine in Appikonda of Visakhapatnam District. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity here, this temple also called Appikonda Temple, contains inscriptions dating back to 12th Century AD, which states that the village was granted by the commander-in-chief of the Chodas.The shrine contains a life-size image of colossal Nandi carved out of a single black stone, is a major attraction for the tourists.

A small fishing centre till a few years back, the metamorphosis of Vizag into a tourism and industrial hub has surprised and pleased tourists. Devotees throng here during Mahashivaratri festival, is celebrated with much devotion. The place now also serves as the nucleus of industries in Visakapatanam.
