List of islands of India

India has two sets of islands that belong to it – Lakshadweep and the Andaman Nicobar Islands. To the east of the Indian mainland is the group of islands called the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. These islands cover an area of around 700 Kms. Thirty six islands in this group are inhabited.

Most areas in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are tropical forests which are home to various species of birds, animals and flowers. Coconut palms and the clear blue waters at the reefs are a constant sight here. The rare flora and fauna, underwater exploration opportunites and an endless list of islands to visit are some of the reasons why you would want to visit the Andamans.

Lakshadweep, which means a hundred thousand islands, is built on ancient volcanic formations. It is the smallest Union Territory of India. It lays approximately 220 - 440 kms from the Malabar Coast of Kerala. There are 36 islands covering an area of 32 sq. kms and out of these only 10 are inhabited - Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan, Minicoy.

Adventure tourism like trekking, island camping, snorkeling, scuba diving etc., are the real attractions in both the island clusters. It’s an experience of a lifetime to explore the totally unknown and unexplored world under the seas. Watch the rich flora and fauna of the sea in their natural habitat. Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep are the best places to enjoy Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in India. In the Andamans, one can enjoy the under-water marine life and view the rarest varieties of corals by Snorkeling in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Carbyn's Cove Tourism Complex, Havelock and other islands. Lakshadweep is fast becoming water sports capital of India and especially of the underwater sea sports.
