Diu Island Tourism


Diu Island is a small island covering an area of 38.8 Sq. km near Junagadh of the Saurashtra Peninsula of Gujarat. The district of Diu is located between the coordinating parallels of 20°44`34" and 20°42`00" north of latitude and between 71°00`24" and 70°52`26" east of longitude.

Diu Island is connected to Gujarat and Maharashtra by road, which connects it to major National Highways of the country. It has no direct rail connections. The nearest important railway station of Diu Island is Veraval, which is directly connected to Rajkot, Ahmedabad and other major cities of the country. It has an airport at Nagoa, which connects it to Mumbai by Jet Airways flights.

Dazzling Daman

Earlier known as 'Damao', Daman is surrounded by the Kolak River on the North, Kalai river on the South and Gulf of Cambay on the West. Divine Diu

The tiny island Diu finds its mention even in the great epic Mahabharata. As legend goes, Pandavas had stayed a few days at Mani Nagar during their exile, which was under the Yadavas led by Krishna Vasudeva. According to mythology, Diu used to be ruled by the great king Jallandhar who was a demon and was killed by Lord Vishnu with his Sudarshan Chakra. The temple of Jallandhar still bears the testimony of this historical incident. The sprawling Diu Fort and Fortino do Mer command the panorama with the flourishing heritage of the Portuguese. Alluring and serene beaches create more magic and charm to Diu.

Getting There

By Air

Nearest airports are Mumbai (193 km from Daman) and Ahmedabad (495 km from Diu). Diu is connected by Vayudoot services with Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

By Rail

Nearest rail head to Daman is Vapi (12 kms) on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad line of western railway whereas the nearest railhead to Diu is Delwada (9 km) connected via Veraval by metre gauge line. However Veraval (85 km) is the convenient railhead connected to Mumbai via Ahmedabad.

By Road

Vapi, which lies on Mumbai-Ahmedabad NH no.8 connects Daman by road to Mumbai-193 km, Ahmedabad- 367 km, Diu-763 km & Panajim via Mumbai -787 km. Regular S.T.Bus services are available from Vapi, Bhilad and Valsad. Diu is well connected by road via Una (30 km) to Ahmedabad- 495 km, Bhavnagar-225 km, Mumbai-930 km, Daman- 763 km, Sasangir- 128 km, Rajkot- 261 km, Somnath- 87 km and Veraval- 77 km.

Local Transport

The best way to explore Daman is by local buses, unnetered taxis and tongas which are available from the rail station to your desirable destinations. Private buses and auto rickshaws are the common features inside Diu island.
